Mother Redcaps – Egremont Foreshore
Where the Smugglers Way Begins
Mother Redcaps stood beside the Mersey at Egremont, close to the point where our Smugglers Way begins. For generations the old inn looked across the river towards Liverpool, while the foreshore below provided a convenient place for boats to approach the Wirral shore. Around it lay a very different landscape from the one seen today, before promenades and later development transformed the river frontage.
A Shoreline of Stories
The history surrounding Mother Redcaps reaches far beyond the famous inn. Along this stretch of the Mersey were old landing places, slipways and changing channels, together with stories of smuggling, sailors and the people who lived beside the river. Exploring the area reveals how much of the old shoreline has disappeared—and how traces of its history can still be found within modern Egremont.
